Flamsteed Astronomy Society

Flamsteed’s 10th Birthday — “10 Glorious Years”

by Jane Bendall and Eddie Yeadon — October 16, 2009

EDDIE:  Of course we needed a name for the new society and several proposals were made.   I think it was Robin Catchpole (then Senior Astronomer) who suggested “Friends of the Royal Observatory Greenwich” so that the initials would spell FROG

This was rejected. The name Flamsteed Astronomy Society, was selected by popular vote, and seemed to capture the unique historical connections which distinguish us from other local astronomical societies.

JANE:  We then drew up a programme

and Francisco launched our first meeting on October 9th 1999.  The Flamsteed was in business.
